Best way to have day-trip from Paris to the French Alps?

We are planning an upcoming trip to France. While we’ll be spending most of our time in Paris, we are hoping to take one or two day-trips to other parts of France. One of the areas we would like to see are the Alps. How long does it take to get to the Alps by train? Would we have time to travel there, enjoy the scenery for an afternoon or so, and get back all in the same day? What city should we visit?

Can you recommend a hotel in Paris in the 100.00 price range which is close to the main attractions?

Will be my first time in Paris. Would like to pay around 100 per night, but could go a little higher. Would love to stay in a boutique style hotel with some charm that is close to the main attractions. Thanks! Also, any recommended restraunts, clubs, etc.

We are going to Paris for just 3 days. Is it worth it to take a side trip to Giverny?

We have very limited time in Paris and I am not sure that it is worth it to See Monet’s Garden. What do you see there or is it just another garden?

I am spending some time in Paris from 12/26 to 1/2, and I was wondering if there were any special operating hours for any of the sites.
